HPE and AMD join forces on El Capitan supercomputer
HPE and AMD have joined forces to create the world's largest supercomputer, designed to manage the U.S. nuclear stockpile. Dubbed “El Capitan,” the supercomputer is being designed for the U.S. Department of Energy by Cray, which HPE acquired for $1.3bn in May 2019. The supercomputer will use AMD chips and could deliver performance greater than that of the existing top 200 supercomputers combined.
